ASSIZE INTELLIGENCE. At Winchester there were 16 prisoners for trial, five of whom were capitally convicted, viz ... John Gains and Isaac West, for robbing George Noyes on the highway near Whippingham, in the Isle of Wight; ... They were all reprieved except Robert Avery. Staffordshire Advertiser, 16 March 1805.

4/3/1805 Salisbury and Winchester Journal Wiltshire, England: WINCHESTER John Gains, and Isaac West, for robbing Mr. George Noyes on the highway in the Isle Wight. Isaac West was also on board. Colonial Secretary Papers: GAINES, John. Per "Fortune", 1806; butcher 1816 May 6: Petition for mitigation of sentence (Fiche 3173; 4/1849 pp.45, 47) 27/6/1818: Sydney Gazette: Wednesday.-Henry Jackson, John Gaines, and Thomas Nobbs, were indicted for killing and stealing two cows, on the first of April last, in the district of Appin, the property of Wm. Broughton, Esq. and were found Guilty- life to Newcastle. 1818 Jun 30: On return of prisoners to be sent to Newcastle per "Lady Nelson" (Reel 6006; 4/3498 p.291) 1823 Sep 26: On list of convicts removed from Newcastle to Port Macquarie per "Sally" (Reel 6019; 4/3864 pp.432-3) 13/11/1824: Burial date for John Gaines, who died at Port Macquarie, aged 44 years.
