William Gait left Spithead, England, on 9/10/1816 onboard 'Fame' (Master Henry Dale) arrived Sydney Cove 8/3/1817. Assigned to Edward Hobson of Parramatta. Married Bridget Hurley (or Curley). Married at St Johns C of E Parramatta by Samuel Marsden (the 'flogging Parson') 16th of March 1818. On 13/11/1821 Gov. Brisbane requested William to remove his flock of sheep from Govt. land. William appointed special ticket of leave Constable of Illawarra 23/12/1824 Resigned as Constable 8/4/1826 By 1828 on census as Ticket of leave, age 48, Protestant, tenant of Illawarra, with 70 acres of land, 25 cleared, 15 cultivated and owner of 37 'horned cattle'. Conditionally pardoned 17/10/1832 pardon number 4/4432 Bridget died 4/8/1865. William noted as member of Camden Temperance League 1867. Died 13/8/1872 Buried Sutton Forrest Catholic cemetery, near their daughter Elizabeth and her husband Martin Larkin.
