Mary Ann Gallagher was transported on the Margaret, departing 30th Apr 1840 and arriving 18th Aug 1840 with 78 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Married convict Joseph Milton on 12 May 1849 Campbeltown NSW. At least 4 children. Joseph Milton b.1850, Mary Jane Malton b.1856, Maria Melton b. 1858, Edward b.1862




Mary Ann Gallagher was listed as 17 years old on arrival. Native Place: Belfast, Antrim County. Mary Ann could read, was RC, single, 4'10" tall, ruddy and much freckled complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, nose short and a little cocked, ZQ MAS on upper left arm. 8/9/1847: COF - described as: 4'11¾" tall, full featured, lost a front tooth right side upper jaw. 14/12/1857: Death listed for Mary Ann Sloane on the QLD BDM.

Marriage to: Bernard Sloane at St Michael's Church, Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia on May 25 1842. Injured: on 24 Nov 1847 near Laidley Creek, Morton Bay, Gallagher was thrown from a dray and had her ankle shattered. Leg was amputated and she died Dec 14 1847.
