Ellen Galvin was transported on the Neva, departing 8th Jan 1835 and arriving 13th May 1835 with 7 passengers.
The Neva was a Three-Masted Barque built at Hull in 1813, Lloyd's register 1814. Traded between England & Jamaica then refitted in 1830's to carry convicts. Tons burthen: 327 bm (builders old measurement) Length: 104 ft 4 in (31.80 m) Beam: 27 ft 1 in (8.26 m) Height: 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) Armament: 4 × 9-pounder guns Second voyage transporting convicts to Australia ended in a disaster, being shipwrecked near King Island, Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) in 1835. It is recorded that only 15 survived, 6 being Irish female convict women and several crew including Capt. Peck. They were transported to Launceston. On board were also several free passengers and children. A total of 224 lives lost and one of the worst ship wrecks in history.

Description at age 19yrs 13 May 1835 - Van Diemen's Land Occupation Housemaid, Convicted at Limerick Ireland, Sentence 7 years, Ship Neva departure date 8 January 1835, arrived Tasmania 13 May 1835 Tuesday 25 Nov 1858 before the Launceston Police Magistrate Alexander Beaton and Ellen Lawrence were fined for disturbing the Peace. Her original conviction? It appears it may have been for stealing cotton cloth. Ellen Galvin and …. were indicted for... two pieces of cotton from John Meade. ; John Meade, sworn—Was looking at the prisoners, .. a pane of glass his shop wlndows snatch .... with which they thought to run away; when ... caught them; Police Serjeant was on … time, and took them into custody. Court—Upon my word I never met a more efficient public officer than Sergeant Riedy. - The prisoners were found Guilty. - Limerick Chronicle, 12 April 1834.

Ellen Galvin was 19 years old, 5'0 3/4" tall, single. From her Indent: Father dead, 2 sisters a Mary Street, Limerick. 1 sister in the Convict Depot at Cork, Mother and 1 sister drowned in the wreck of the Neva - still no offence stated. 1835 Muster: Assigned to Captain Stewart. 28/9/1838: Ellen Galvin (Neva) Permission to marry William Lawrence (Juliana) 29/10/1838: Married William Lawrence at Longford - no children found. 1841: Free Certificate.

conduct report: offence not stated, Single Transported to VDL on ill fated second voyage of the Neva free certificate #1042, 1841 newspapers reported the number embarked as 150 female prisoners, 9 free women and 55 children. The Neva departed Cork on 8th January 1835. Three people died in the earlier part of the voyage and one child was born. Following hard on the disaster of the Convict Ship George III which was wrecked on 12th April 1835, the Neva was wrecked north of King Island on 13th May 1835. All perished except six of the women: Ellen Galvin, Mary Slattery, Ann Cullen, Rose Ann Hyland, Rose Dunn and Margaret Drury. Nine of the Ship's Crew Survived: Captain Benjamin Peck, First Officer Joseph Bennett, Thomas Sharp, John Wilson, Edward Calthorpe, Thomas Hines, Robert Ballard, John Robinson and William Kidney.
