16/8/1817 Oxford Journal: WARWICK ASSIZES. - The following are the names and offences of the prisoners capitally convicted:-...John Short, Richard Eagles, and George Gardner, for stealing from the person of J. Chandler, at the Grey Horse, in Dale End, Birmingham, a purse, with three 1 pound notes, and cash to the amount of 45 shillings and 12 pence, his property. Richard Eagles was on board Neptune, no ship found John Short but there was a James Short convicted on the same date and on board the same ship. George arrived in VDL on the 1/12/1819 per ‘Admiral Cockburn’. Colonial Secretary Papers: GARDNER, George. Per "Neptune", 1818 1824 Oct 27: Re extract from indent of (Reel 6019; 4/3522 p.102) This extract was from his original indent and stated that George Gardner was 25 years old, 5’4 ½” tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair, dark eyes, Native Place: Birmingham, and was sent to VDL Captain Montague, Hobart Town and signed by F. Goulburn. Tried Warwick Ass. 2/8/1817 7 years. - **All other records state ‘Life’.** By 1823 had a TOL 26/9/1831: Fined £1 and ordered to keep the peace for assaulting Mary Scales.
