[Appendix No. 11.] “Statement by Mr. John Whitehead. John Whitehead, Parish Clerk of St. John’s Church, Parramatta, stated to the Archdeacon of New South Wales that, on Sunday, the 12th of this month, the Revd. F. Wilkinson read the morning and evening Service and Preached in the evening, the Revd. Mr. Marsden having preached in the morning. At the close of the Service in the afternoon about four o’clock, Mr. Wilkinson baptized four children and registered them; that, before five o’clock, he buried a corpse but did not register it; that, upon pressing the Revd. Mr. Wilkinson two or three times to register the Burial in consequence of having been reprimanded before by the Archdn. for omitting to procure the signature of the Revd. John Vincent to two Burials, Mr. Wilkinson replied that he was in too great haste to do it then, or to that effect; but that, on being asked if he passed the Church that evening or on the following morning he would call and sign the Register, he replied that he would do so. That Mr. Wilkinson, in going from the burial Ground to the Town being on horseback, rode within three hundred Yards of the Church wherein the Register was lying and always is kept. That the Revd. Michael, aged 24 & William, aged 26 had been tried at Sussex GD (Horsham) on 13 March 1797 & given a 7 years term. Michael had CF #652 2) John Whitehead arrived in Sydney on the Morley (2) on 7 Nov 1818. He was sentenced at Lancaster Assize on 23 March 1817 & had a 14 year sentence. John was from Manchester, aged 46, a weaver, 5’8” tall, dark ruddy complexion, with brown to grey hair & hazel eyes. John per Morley 2 was listed as having received a CP in 1825. [This is not shown in SRNSW Convict Pardon index & must be incorrect] (Sydney Gazette, 28/11/1825, p3). John Whitehead received his COF on 26/03/1831. Arr per Morley (2) 1818, a native of Manchester, a weaver born 1772, tried at Lancaster Assize on 22/03/1817, & a 14 year term for uttering forged notes, 5’7¾” tall, with fair complexion, black to grey hair & hazel eyes. (Source: SRNSW Certificate of Freedom, NRS 12210, Item 4/4304, Roll 987) [Note: Whitehead had also been tried at Lancaster January Sessions in 1810 for uttering counterfeit money & had received a sentence of 3 years in gaol. Possibly released early for good behaviour. In 1812 John appeared in the Lancaster Court accused of larceny but the case was “no prosecution”. At the July Sessions at Liverpool in 1816, the same charge and the same finding of “no prosecution”.
