Family connections for Mary (Garnham) are: GARNHAM Mary (Garnham) was born about 1768/83. She was tried for shop lifting cotton cloth, on 22 12 1798, at Old Bailey on 9 1 1799 , sentenced to death reprieved to 7years, held at London Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 15 4 1800 after a voyage of 6months on SPEEDY. She was recorded in 1806 as Mary (Gardner). She married as Mary (Garnham the same person?) John (Brown his second marriage) on 8 4 1811 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & produced 3children: she is recorded in census as Margery (Garnham) with John (Brown. She was Free by Servitude by 1812. She died on 29 10 1819 age about52 from suicide hanging. [Some details taken from this Website] John (Brown) was born about 1778. He was tried for breaking entering & stealing at Old Bailey on 15 1 1800, sentenced to death commuted to Life, held at London Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 12 6 1801 after a voyage of 10months on EARL CORNWALLIS; he was Protestant. In the colony, Mary married John Brown (Convict, Earl Cornwallis, 1801). John Brown of the parish of St John Parramatta and Mary Garnham of ditto were married in this church by banns this eighth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven by me Samuel Marsden, Chaplain. John signed the register and Mary made her X mark. in the presence of John Ferguson who signed the register and Mary Carol who made her X mark. Mary and John had three children, James 1804, John 1807 and Thomas 1812. In the 1820 census there is a side note: Garnham, Mary, Jan 1800, Speedy, Quested Old Bailey Jan 1799, Life; Dead. Mary had committed suicide by hanging on 31-10-1819.

Mary Garnham trial at Old Bailey: 9 January 1799. (old Bailey Transcripts t17990109-32); MARY GARNHAM, Theft > shoplifting, 9th January 1799. MARY GARNHAM was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 22nd of December, six yards of cotton, value 12s. the property of William Hopps, privately in his shop. GEORGE HOPPS sworn. - Mr. William Hopps, my uncle, keeps a linen-draper's shop in Cannon-street : On the 22d of December, between one and two o'clock, the prisoner came in, I shewed her several patterns, none of them suited her, she did not buy any thing, I began to put the goods away again; I turned round and saw her going out of the shop, with a print, partly concealed under her cloak; I took the print from her, and sent for an officer. JAMES GRAY sworn. - I was in the back shop, when the prisoner came in. Q. Did you see the prisoner take any thing? - A. No; not till she was going out; upon turning my head round, I saw the print hanging out. Q. Was there any other person in the shop? - A. No. JOHN RAPSON sworn. - I am an officer; I took charge of the prisoner, and Mr. Hopps delivered me this print, (producing it). Hopps. This is my uncle's print. Q. What is the value of it? - A. Twelve shillings; it cost rather more. Prisoner's defence. I took the piece of cotton to the door to look at it. Hopps. She said, none of the patterns suited her, and she was going out of the shop. GUILTY Death . (Aged 31.) The prisoner was recommended to mercy by the Jury. Tried by the London Jury, before Mr. Justice HEATH.
