Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Gavin was convicted of theft and house/shop breaking at the age of 19. He received a Ticket of Leave 10 February 1843 and got his Certificate of Freedom 11 September 1844. Gavin boarded the ship Gem on 30 September 1851 and immigrated to the mainland of Australia. On 13 May 1854, Gavin married free settler Sarah Acheson at Armidale NSW, and had 6 children.
