The 'Brampton' ship was built in 1817 at King's Lynn, Norfolk, England. Originally used by the East India Company and then whaling before being a convict transport ship. Many of the Irish convicts on this ship were convicted under the Insurrection Act, for White Boy offences. 24 April 1823, the Sydney Gazette reported: On Tuesday last arrived from Ireland, with 183 male convicts, the ship Brampton, Captain Moore. She left London the 28th of July last; sailed from the Cove of Cork on the 8th of November; and last from the Cape of Good Hope, the 20th of February, from whence she brings eleven convicts.—Surgeon Superintendent, Dr. Price, R. A petition from his wife (probably from 1825) offers more information about the convict. - convicted during a special sessions in Mullingar (Co Westmeath) in June 1822 - found guilty of writing a threatening letter to Rev. Charles Fignoles - married with ten children - Michael was working as a convict in Sydney CO 201/178, pp 602-603




Michael GEOGHEGAN was convicted at Westmeath, Ireland in 1822. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to New South Wales, Australia per the ship 'Brampton' 1822/23. Aged 40 yrs; a clerk and also roadmaker. Native place of birth: Westmeath, Ireland.
