Ann married Joseph SMITH (BDM:899/1819 & 2367/1819) Second marriage to John VARNEL/VERNAL (BDM:3453/1824) at Campbelltown, NSW Ann is buried as Ann Vernal in St Peter's cemetery on 7 July 1844 (St Peter's Church register).

Ann lived with Abraham Whitaker (Convict, Coromandel, 1802) and had 3 children with him, between 1808 and 1813. Then she had married Joseph Smith (Convict, Fortune, 1806) and had a further 3 children. Joseph Smith, free of the parish of Liverpool and Ann Gibbons, free, of ditto were married in this church by banns this 31 day of May 1819 by me Samuel Marsden. Joseph and Ann both made their X marks in the register in the presence of James Emmett who signed the register and Jane Ewert who made her X mark. She was widowed in 1824 and quite soon after, married John Varnel (Convict, Atlas, 1816). Some of the children were quite young when the couple married.




Ann was tried and convicted of larceny at Worcester Assizes on 24 Mar 1804. 'Ann Gibbons late of the Parish of St Swithins in the City of Worcester...single woman on the 10th March (1804)...[stole] one gown (15/-) two petticoats (5/-) one pair of stockings (3/-) one bonnet (3/-) and one handkerchief (1/-) (the property of ) John Haynes -- Guilty. To be transported for 7 years.' Whilst in goal awaiting transportation Ann conceived a child she called Benjamin Baker. Benjamin was born on the voyage to the colony. She arrived on the ship 'William Pitt' with her baby Benjamin Baker.
