Convicted by jury of stealing a horse on 30th October 1832. Horse valued at Fourteen Pounds, the property of James Salt.Occupation given as labourer (PRO ASSI 35/272/3) Winter Gaol Delivery at Maidstone 10th December 1832 ..adds theft took place at Sittingbourne. Occupation given as Baker. Transferred to the Retribution hulk at Sheerness 20 Dec 1832 (Maidstone Journal and Kentish Adviser 25 Dec 1832) Convict indent gives occupation as Baker (complete) ..suggesting a completed apprenticeship Assigned to Charles Throsby, Throsby Park 18 December 1835 Application to marry granted. "James Gilbert age 30 Life Bond to Ann Frost came free. By Rev Vincent at Sutton Forest. Mr Chas Throsby the Master of Gilbert has agreed to keep both in his employ until the man obtains his TL" They married at All Saints Sutton Forest on 2 January 1836. (Ann Frost was a bounty passenger arrived 25 Oct 1834 on the "David Scott" as part of emigration program to attract young women to the Colony. Age given as 20 .. employer Charles Throsby) They had four children: 1. George Parkinson Gilbert b 19 October 1836 (chr 20 November 1836 at All Saints) James Gilbert shown as "assigned servant" of Bong Bong 2. Martha Parkinson Gilbert b 24 March 1838 (chr 22 April 1838) James Gilbert shown as "assigned servant of Mr Throsby" and "of Sutton Forest" 3. Elizabeth Parkinson Gilbert b 6 June 1839 (chr 23 of? 1840 at All Saints) 4. Ann Parkinson Gilbert b 8 June 1841 (chr 25 July 1841 at All Saints) James Gilbert given as "Farmer" and of Bong Bong. 41/2071 James obtained his Ticket of Leave 8 October 1841. James Gilbert worked as a groom at Throsby Park and was killed by a horse kick to the head. He died on 23 April 1843. Buried 26 April 1843 "age 38 years" Farmer. His headstone is at the old cemetery at All Saints Sutton Forest (originally inscribed "James Jilbert" a brass plaque has since been attached.
