John Gildea was transported with his brother Richard, also onboard, for the manslaughter of an old woman during a market riot. John was listed as 27 years old on arrival. Native Place: Mayo County. Father: Richard Mother: Bridget 3 brothers, 3 sisters. John was literate, 5'11ΒΌ" tall, pale complexion, dark brown hair, reddish whiskers, light grey eyes, mark of a boil on right elbow, small scar on right cheek, scars on both legs. Married with 5 children. Wife: Mary Hopkins. Was a convict constable. 30/5/1848: TOL 13/1/1852: COF Moved to Melbourne, Vic. 1852: Married Catherine Dwyer at St. Francis Church, Melbourne, Vic. 1852: Involved in the Melbourne Police force as a constable. C1855: Was the publican of the 'Young Queen' at Pascoe Vale. John had a problem with drinking, he beat his wife and was charged by the court for not maintaining his family. Later shot a man at his pub, sent to jail for 6 months - Catherine returned and they had another 5 children. 9/10/1879: John Gildea died at Kilmore in Victoria, aged 65, of TB. Buried at Kilmore Cemetery. Married at Melbourne at 35yrs. to Catherine Dwyer. Children: Mary 22yrs. Hannah 18yrs. Catherine 16yrs. Patrick 16yrs.
