Family connections for Mary (Giles) are: GILES Mary (Giles) was born on 8 9 1769. She was tried for stealing a silk cloak etc, on 22 2 1793, of John (Hughes) at Old Bailey on 10 4 1793, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 17 10 1794 after a voyage of 8.5months on SURPRISE. She was also known as Mary (Toone-Giles). She had a first known relationship with Samuel (Porter his first relationship) in 1795-marriage not shown in Smees records. She was Free by Servitude by 1802.>>> [These details taken from this Website] Samuel (Porter) was born about 1764 in Ireland & became a weaver. He enlisted in NSW Corps at Savoy London on 15 8 1792 as a sergeant; he was 5.56'. He arrived in NSW as a soldier on 7 8 1793 after a voyage of 6months on BODDINGTONS. He was raised to Corporal in 1794. In 1798 he was detached to (Rowley)s company as sergeant. He was detached to Johnston)s company in 1801 as Corporal. He married secondly Elizabeth (Walpole her first (1of3) marriage) emancipist on 5 2 1804 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He became sergeant again on 25 7 1808 & in that year was detached to (Savory)s company. In 1809 he was detached to (Brabyn)s company then 4Company. He was transfered to Veterans Company on 24 4 1810. He was a sergeant when he died on 26 5 1813 ag49 & was buried at St Phillips CofE Sydney. Elizabeth (Walpole) was born about 1778. She was tried at Westmeath Ireland, sentenced to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 2 1796 after a voyage of 6months on MARQUIS CORNWALLIS. She was issued her Absolute Pardon by 1811. She married secondly (2of3) Thomas (Herbert) on 27 3 1815 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She married thirdly Felix (McCanna age45) emancipist on 2 8 1819 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He enlisted in NSW Corps on 17 6 1794 in Sydney as a private. He was issued his Conditional Pardon on 30 9 1794. He was detached to (Abbott)s company in 1798. On 18 11 1804 he was raised to Corporal. He was discharged on 25 11 1806 as unfit for service. He died on 25 5 1813 age55. MARY GILES was indicted for stealing, on the 22d of February , a silk cloak, value 10 s. a woman's cotton gown, value 6 s. a muslin apron, value 2 s. a white linen apron, value 2 s. a check linen apron, value 1 s. two womens muslin caps, value 2 s. two linen caps, value 6 d. a pair of cotton stockings, value 1 s. a pair of womens leather shoes, value 1 s. and a man's linen shirt, value 1 s. the goods of John Hughes. JOHN HUGHES sworn. I live in Cartwright-street, No. 39, Rosemary-lane ; I was at work at the time this robbery happened; I came home and I saw the property before the the justice, and I missed the property at home on the 22d of February last. MARY HUGHES sworn. I am the wife of the last witness. On the 22d of February, I only went to the next door for some potatoes for my husband's dinner, I don't think I was gone ten minutes, I came to my door and I found my door open, and this woman running out of it; I had left my door locked with the key in it at the outside; I had the middle room in the house; when I came she ran up two, three or four stairs to the garret, I cannot exactly say which; I asked her who she wanted? or what business she had in my room? or whether she wanted the woman that lived up stairs? she said, she did want the woman that lived up stairs, and I directly called the woman, she said the woman was not at home, as soon as I called she came and opened the door; the prisoner directly ran away, and I finding my door open I ran after her, she went into a court and up some strange stairs, and I apprehended her myself; she had with her one cotton gown, one black silk cloak, &c. as in the indictment; the things are here. (Produced and deposed to.) I took her back to the place where she took them from, and then I took them from her; I did not know the woman before. HENRY HARRIS sworn. I am a dealer in old clothes. On the 22d of February, I came to Rosemary-lane, and I saw a mob standing there, and I took the goods from off the ground and some pick-lock keys out of her pockets. The prisoner called one witness who gave her a good character. GUILTY. (Aged 23.) Transported for seven years. Tried by the second Middlesex Jury before Lord KENYON. --------------------------------------------------
