West Yorkshire Assizes. Joshua Gladwin, 34, striker, was charged with a rape at Leeds, girl under ten years of age, named Lilly Foster, who, at the time, was  with Mr. Harper, photographer, Blackburn-lane, Leeds, about the time of last feast.—Guilty; fifteen years' penal servitude.    Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 19 Dec 1864.  Joshua Gladwin, aged 34, striker, was indicted for a rape upon Lilly Foster, a child seven years old, at Leeds, on the 29th September. The child gave her evidence very clearly, and stated that as she was going to Woodhouse Feast she met the prisoner, who took her into a field, and there, by using threats, succeeded in committing the offence.  She was corroborated by two gentlemen who caught him in the act, and by the surgeon who deposed to the appearance of the child. He was convicted, and in reply to the usual question whether he had anything to say why sentence should not be passed upon him, he said that he admitted that his previous character was not such as it should have been, but he had endeavoured as far as possible since he came home to get an honest livelihood, but he had been dismissed from his work on account of his previous character. He said that if his lordship would give him one single chance more he would promise faithfully, candidly, and honestly never to appear in that or anyother court ?? lordship said that the prisoner had rightly anticipated that the court was made aware pi his previous character. His career had been one of the worst possible description. For a series of years he had been charged with felony after felony; sometimes he had been fortunate enough to be discharged, at other times he had been convicted, and upon two occasions he had received sentences of four years' penal servitude. He bad suggested to the court that he had been discharged from various situations in consequence of his previous character, and from that cause he had not been able to earn an honest livelihood but that could not possibly account for the crime of which he had been convicted.  The sentence of the court was that he be kept in penal servitude for 15 years. The prisoner, on being removed, said, I beg your pardon, sir, you will have to hang me yet. G- strike me blind, you will have to hang me. Liverpool Mercury, 21 Dec 1864
