Rebecca Dear was born circa 1780, probably in London. On 8th July 1800 at St Mary's Church, Hemel Hempstead she married one John Golsby. She and John had several children over the next few years but they almost all died very young, Only one, William, born 12th May 1808 survived. In August 1809, whilst working as a servant for Mr and Mrs Few in Tottenham, Rebecca was arrested for theft. Mrs Few and her husband John had been in Brighton for some time in late August and when they returned they found that a number of items were missing from the house. These items included sheets, table cloths, napkins, gooseberry wine and some material. Some of these items were discovered in Rebecca's possession. She was confronted, arrested, tried and convicted at the Old Bailey (t18091101-48). Her sentence was transportation for 7 years. She travelled on the 'Friends' and was accompanied by her little son William, aged about 3. In the colony she did form a relationship with Joseph Tuso and they had several children. Tuzo was a First Fleet convict and had been transported for Highway Robbery (when he was 14). He was transported on 'Scarborough'. 1814 Muster Record: 6958 page 156: Rebecca Goldsmith, Friends, C, On Stores, 2 children on stores, wife to Joseph Tuzo. 1825 Census, Rebecca recorded as Rebecca Golsby, widow (Joseph died in 1825) with children William, CF and Mary Ann, Priscilla and Johanna all born in the colony. 1828 Census: G0840 page 166: Goulby, Rebecca, 45, FBS, Friends, 1812, 7, Charwoman, Kent Street, Sydney. Also listed are her daughters; Priscilla Tuzo 12 [T1396 p375] and Johanna Tuzo 10 [T1397 p375] as lodgers with Reb, Goulby. No entry located for William Golsby, however, he had married Elizabeth Jenkins, only the year before. She was the daughter of William Jenkins (Convict, Coromandel, 1802) and Sarah Ann Chivers (Came Free, Elizabeth, 1806). William and Elizabeth had 11 children.
