Crown Court 13 prisoners were tried, nine of whom were capitally convicted, and received sentence of death, viz.— John Gothard, aged 33. for stealing a mare, land field, the property of James Harding. … The unhappy convicts were all reprieved before Judges left town. In the colony, John married Sarah Turner, around 1817 at Sydney. Their names were published in order 2 June 1817: John Goddard, Convict, Marquis Cornwallis and Sarah Turner, free. John and Sarah had 7 children and then Sarah died, leaving him with the young family in 1828. He then married Honora Sullivan (Convict, Lady Rowena, 1826) in late 1828. She had been assigned as a housekeeper for the young family. In the 1828 Census there is no sign of the Goddard family at all, although Honora is recorded as a servany to John Tovey, so clearly she is not with John Goddard then.

John Gothard was convicted of stealing a mare, at Lindfield, the property of James Harding. He was sentenced to death on 21 March 1814, the sentence reprieved to transportation for life.
