HO17 Petition for Clemency Petition Zs3 Submitted by Mary Ann's Mother - Sarah Crocker "The humble petition of Sarah Crocker Sheweth That a daughter of your petitioners, Mary Ann Goulding (who assumed her mothers maiden name) was convicted along with Elizabeth Diamond and Emma Wells at the late Clerkenwell SEssons of stealing a watch from a Brokers shop in Oxford STreet and low lies in Newgate under sentence of transportation for 7 years. Permit your petitioner to state that her daugther in only in her thirteenth years, that she never was in a prison till now andthat your petitioner verily believes this is her first dishonest act nor would she have committed this had she not have been enticed from her work (a silk winder) her ill designed persons and made their dupe. The prosecutor at the trial recommended her to mercy on account of her youth and even told the Chairman that he thought she had been led away by the others. Under the circumstances your Petitioner hopes that your Lordship will be pleased not to send her out of the Country but order her to be sent to the refuge or penitentiary so that your Petitioner may yet see her become a useful member of society And your Petitioner As in Duty bound Will ever pray 22nd March 1834" This clearly shows her Mother saying she is 13. Mother is Sarah Crocker, so Mary Ann is actuallly Mary Ann Crocker, but took on her Mother's maiden name, maybe to not bring shame on the family? Mary Ann's death certificate has her maiden name as Crocker
According to 'Founders and Survivors' webpage, Mary Ann was 13 years old on arrival, however, on her headstone at the Amherst Cemetery, Talbot, Victoria, Mary Ann died on 12/7/1880 aged 66, which would make her birthdate 1814 and 20 years old on arrival. Mary Ann was transported for 'Stealing a clock', she was 4'7 1/2" tall, illiterate, fair complexion, brown hair, dark brown eyes, scar on left cheek, single. Native place: Bethnal Green. 1835: House of Correction. 10/3/1841: Married Robert Bright (Georgiana 1833) 1 son James born 16/3/1842 - William 1848, Robert 1856 born Loddon, Victoria, there were other children. 12/7/1880: Mary Ann died and was buried with Robert at the Amherst Cemetery, Talbot, Victoria.
Copies of original handwritten records in the Tasmanian Archives (LINCs) shows that Mary Ann Goulding (ship:Edward)married Robert Bright (ship: Georgiana) on 10th March, 1841 (St Johns church,marriage registered in Launceston).At the time of their marriage it states Robert was a labourer aged 24 and Mary Ann Goulding was a convict aged 20.The ages on the marriage record may be wrong as ships records say Robert Bright was aged 19 in 1832. This means it is worth checking the birth dates for both.There is another Mary goulding in convict reords who arrived on the Rajah so it may cause some confusion.
