Examiner. Tue 17 Feb 1942. Page 4. IT HAPPENED 90 YEARS AGO IT HAPPENED 90 YEARS AGO. From the Files of "The Examiner" of February, 1852 THE LATE ASSAULT.-William Gout, the man in custody for stabbing Constable Roebuck, was brought up at the police office on Monday and remanded until Friday next, when it is expected that the constable, who is recovering from the effects of his wounds, will be able to give his evidence. Gout is a pass holder, and not a ticket-holder, as stated in our last. William Gout, convicted of attempting to murder Constable Roebuck, was sentenced to death. His honor dwelt on the cowardly and aggravated nature of the prisoner's offence, and held out no hopes of, mercy.
