Supreme Court - Criminal Side. Saturday Nov 3. Joseph Gowenlock, a runaway convict, stood indicted for stealing sundry articles from the dwelling-house of William Flannagan, of One Tree Hill, on the 18th March last. The prisoner was acquitted on this charge in consequence of the prosecutor being a Ticket-of-leave man, for the Act of Parliament runs, that no such person can hold property. The prisoner was then indicted for assaulting one John Williams, at Bathurst, on the 19th May, with intent to kill and murder him, with a pistol loaded with powder and ball, which he placed to prosecutor's (a constable) head when he was about to take him into custody. — Guilty — Sentence of death recorded against the prisoner, with a recommendation that he be sent to a penal settlement for life, and never allowed to return to the colony. Commercial Journal, 10 Nov 1838.

On Saturday sennight, between eleven and twelve o'clock, as Richard Barfoot, a journeyman tailor, whose home is in Bedfordshire, having arrived late in Chatham on his way from Maidstone, was seeking for a lodging, he fell in with two men having the appearance of mechanics,  who offered to point him out a respectable lodging, where he might take up his abode for the night, and under that pretence they decoyed him from the street over the New-road, and thence down Clover-lane, where, upon his refusing to be led by them into Richard-street, and intimating wish to proceed to the High street in preference, one of his treacherous guides struck him violently on the head, and, on his falling to  the ground almost deprived of sense, robbed him of a pair of trowsers which was carrying, at the same time snatching his handkerchief from his neck; and then with his confederate rr n away into the dark streets of that neighbourhood.  Fortunately Cbeetham and Bridges, two of the Chatham watchmen, were near the spot. They went to the poor man's assistance, and in a few minutes succeeded in discovering and apprehending one of the robbers in Best-street, with the stolen property upon him. This man was brought before the Rev. George Davies on Wednesday, and committed for trial at the next Assizes. He calls himself Joseph Gowenlock, a turner, of Carlisle, and it is supposed he had several confederates with him at Chatham, although he alone is at present in custody. Active exertions are, however, being made for the apprehension of the other robber. Kentish gazette, 1 Oct 1833. Kent Assizes. Joseph Gowenlock, 22, charged with having feloniously assaulted and robbed Richard Barfoot. the King's highway, at Chatham, of pair of trousers, one neckerchief, one thimble, and six needles, value 8s. 6d. his property. —Death Recorded Kentish Gazette, 17 Dec 1833.
