Indent No; 4016. Status; Married. Trade: Farm Labour and Sawyer Offence; Stealing a tame rabbit. Executed at Hobart Town on 23 November 1847. Colonial Times (Hobart, Tas. : 1828 - 1857) View title info Fri 22 Oct 1847. Page 3. SUPREME COURT-CRIMINAL SITTINGS. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1847. Twenty-two prisoners were arraigned this morning : there are two capital offences, viz., that of James Keeley, formerly a constable at New Town, for shooting at William Jaques, and that of Laban Gower, noticed in our last, for cutting the throat of Ann Mayhew, Mr. Gage's servant. The Courier (Hobart, Tas. : 1840 - 1859) Wed 27 Oct 1847 Page 2. HOBART TOWN SUPREME COURT. ATTEMPT TO MURDER. Laban Gower stood charged with having, on the 14th of October, inflicted a wound on the neck of Ann Mayfield, with intent then and there to kill and murder her. Another count of the information charged the offence with having been committed with intent to inflict upon the prosecutrix some grievous bodily harm. Ann Mayfield, who gave her evidence in a low tone of voice, stated that, on the 14th October instant, she was in the service of Mr. J. Ogle Gage, Old Beach, and at about nine o'clock had occasion to go from the kitchen into the garden. When she got near to the garden, the prisoner followed her; he rushed out upon her, and put his hand round her waist. Witness told him she was very ill, and desired that he would let her go. He did so, and said nothing. She then went to the kitchen, and sat down to her work, sewing, and in about ten minutes the prisoner came to her again. He had on a blue flannel frock, but no shoes or stockings. He asked her to go out, which she declined. He then asked, would she go out on the follow- ing evening ; to which she replied she did not know until to-morrow night came. The witness then described the prisoner again coming down to the kitchen in about five minutes, and on her going out, knocking her against the wall, and inflicting a wound on her throat with a razor. Evidence was given as to the nature of the wound, and in corroboration of the statement of prosecutrix. The jury found the prisoner guilty.
