Committed to gaol, by Major Stewart. Chief Magistrate of Police, Martin Grady, John Grady, and John Kelly, for having, on the night of the 10th of August, proceeded with many others, to the dwelling-house of Mr Ed. Ref: CSO/RP/SC/1821/1726 Letter from Richard Willcocks, Cashel, County Tipperary, chief police magistrate for County Limerick, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, 25 December 1821, enclosing copies of 5 letters from ‘the unfortunate men now under sentence of death in Limerick jail: John and Martin Grady; Michael Kelly; John Mullane; Timothy Shea; and John Histon, 23 December 1821-24 December 1821. Willcocks advises, that having already made examples by executing men convicted at the Limerick Special Commission, a show of mercy from government might now also be ‘beneficial’, particularly in resulting in the surrender of arms in the possession of the disaffected.

A King's messenger arrived here yesterday afternoon, with a respite, directing that the execution of Martin and John Grady, (brothers), who were to be hanged on the following day at Shanagolden, pursuant to sentence at the last Commission, should be postponed until further orders. Yesterday's post brought an order, that they should be transmitted to the Penitentiary House at Cork, and delivered into custody there; and this morning, pursuant to said directions, they were sent off under a military guard. The commutation of sentence was received with the greatest gratitude by the convicts, and it is hoped will have a salutary effect on the peasantry, who be convinced of the humanity of the Government, in endeavouring to stop the effusion of human of human blood—though the crimes which have been committed in this county, called loudly for commensurate chastisement.
