(Mr Townsend was unhurt.) He was an educated man, who worked for many years in the accounting office of a merchant of the city of London, but had become infatuated with a young lady, Miss Ward, the daughter of the late Lord Ward, whom he wanted to marry. He had been bankrupt about a year before the shooting. The juudge questioned his sanity during the case, but he was sentenced to death. The case received considerable coverage in the newspapers at the time. --------------------------------------------------- Yesterday John Grant, who was to have been executed this day, for firing a pistol at Mr. Townshend, received a respite during his Majesty's pleasure Salisbury and Winchester Journal, 18 July 1803. --------------------------------------------------
