1890, 26 November: John GRANT, aged 80 [79], was admitted to Maitland Jail. His native place was Scotland; born 1811; arrived per Clorinda 1835; occupation labourer; religion Presbyterian. He is described as 5'6½”, medium build, fresh complexion, with gray hair and eyes; scar on throat. He can read and write. He has no previous convictions recorded. He is in jail pending his court appearance on 8 December 1890. 1890, 8 December: Maitland Quarter Sessions - John Grant's "offence" is attempted suicide. 1890, 8 December: He was sent from Maitland Jail to the Benevolent Asylum (see NSW, Gaol Description and Entrance Books 1818-1930; Photograph Description Book; Maitland 1875-1930).


1835, 12 May: John GRANT, Protestant (Presbyterian), a Private in the 78th Regiment, was 24 and single on arrival in NSW. His native place was Scotland. 1835, 12 May: From the Clorinda, he was admitted to the Phoenix Hulk and held there until 14 May when he was sent to Hyde Park Barracks (see NSW Convict Records 1810-91; Phoenix Hulk Entrance Records 1833-1837).


1835, 21 April: John GRANT per Clorinda was admitted to HM’s Gaol, Hobart Town, “while Clorinda remains in port”. On 25 April 1835, he was discharged and re-embarked on the Clorinda for the final leg of her voyage to Sydney from Ceylon (see Tasmania, Australia, Convict Court and Selected Records, 1800-1899; Register, HM Gaol Record Book - Alphabetical Register of Prisoners Admitted).


1829, 26 October: His crime is not unknown; it's just not listed in the options. The following is an extract from the proceedings of his General Court Martial, held at Kandy on 26 October 1829 (taken from the ship's Muster Roll - see above): "CRIME: For levelling and mapping a loaded Firelock at Quarter Master Sergeant Watson 78th Regiment, whilst in the execution of his office, with intent to shoot him, the said Quarter Master Sgt Watson, on or about the 13th instant at Kandy. "Opinion and sentence: The Court ... is of the opinion that the prisoner, Private John Grant 78th Regiment, is guilty of the crime alleged against him". Sentence: Transportation as a felon for life.
