Tuesday morning, about ten o’clock, Francis Povey, from Maidenhead, for burglary, and Thus. Dormer, for stealing poultry, both for trial at the next Assizes, had cut off their fetters, and were going to endeavour to make their escape over the exterior wall of their day ward. They had formed hooks from the bails of their cast-iron pots, which was in their day wards for the purpose of cooking with. They had platted very complete ropes from the short strands of Junk rope to scale the wall with; but the turnkey had an occasion to ask a question of one of them, and entered the ward in time prevent the attempt at escape. Solomon Ford and Francis Green, from Henley, transports for fourteen years each, for sheep stealing; William Wilkins, for burglary, transport for seven years; Samuel Richards, for a highway robbery, from Windsor; and Richard Eagle, for Sessions, for stealing a shirt from Easthampstead, had each attempted cut off their irons, and were to have joined the escape if possible. Windsor and Eton Express, 18 May 1817.
