SUPREME COURT. FRIDAY AUGUST 13. (Before the three Judges.) The undermentioned prisoners, who had been tried during the Session, were brought up, and sentenced as follows : — John Gregg, convicted of highway robbery in the neighbourhood of Penrith. Mr. Justice Burton addressing him said, he had been convicted of a highway robbery committed under such circumstances as precluded him from recommending the case, to the merciful consideration of his Excellency. He was a ticket of leave holder, and capable of earning a livelihood by honest means. He however had been in the habit of supplying the assigned servants upon a neighbouring farm with spirits. But the offences for which he had been convicted were these—that he had gone to the house of a constable, from whence by force he took away a gun ; he then proceeded into the bush towards the house of prosecutor, from whom he demanded money ; he took prosecutor into the bush to get money, which the latter had " planted." When detected by the police, he was standing over prosecutor with the musket loaded, and cocked. It was impossible therefore, that the governor and council, could grant any remission in the punishment. He then proceeded to pass sentence of death upon the prisoner. Sydney Gazette, 20 Aug 1836. EXECUTION.—John Gregg, convicted at the last Criminal Sessions of robbing and putting in bodily fear, suffered death yesterday pursuant to his sentence. He was a prisoner of the Crown, holding a Ticket-of-Leave for the district of Liverpool, and had for some time been in the practice of going about the country levying contributions as an armed bush-ranger. Sydney Monitor, 3 Sep 1836.
