Convict Notes

While drinking ale at an inn in Shrewsbury, Richard was under the impression he had permission to sell a calf belonging to a fellow drinker. He sold the calf for 25s and on his way back to give the money, he fell in with some women who took him to further drinking houses until he fell asleep at which point they robbed him of the money. Richard was convicted for stealing the calf and a woman, Elizabeth Potham, was convicted of stealing the money. Richard was sentenced to transportation for life and Elizabeth was only sentenced for 3 months hard labour. Richard died shortly after arriving in Van Diemen's Land. He was only about 27 years old.
