Family connections for Sarah (Griggs) are: GRIGGS Sarah (Griggs) was born about 1772 & became a house servant. She was tried for theft of an apron at Sandwich Kent Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship NEPTUNE. She arrived on Norfolk Island on 7 8 1790. She had a first relationship with John (Townson his second relationship) & produced 1child.>>> [Some details taken from this Website] John (Townson) was born in 1760 in Shropshire. He became a lieutenant before enlisting in NSW Corps on 17 10 1789 & arrived in NSW as an officer on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH. He was a Lieutenant when he moved to Norfolk Island with his wife in 1791. On 1 6 1793 he was granted 100acres at Parramatta. On 20 2 1794 he leased 20acres on Norfolk Island. On 6 5 1795 he was raised to Captain. On 1 1 1796 he leased 200X100 (50acres?) lot in Sydney which he later sold. He is recorded in 1796 as holding 50acres on plot no.100 at Queensborough Norfolk Island. He was Lieutenant Governor in charge at Norfolk Island from October 1796 to November 1799. On 15 9 1798 he was granted 4acres at Parramatta. He was still at Norfolk Island in 1799. He became to ill & returned to UK in October 1801, returning to Sydney in August 1808 where he became Quarter Master. He suffered from deafness & ill health from June 1808 to March 1809. On 9 7 1808 he was granted 2,000acres at Bexley. On 20 10 1809 he was granted 250acres at Botany Bay. He returned again to UK in May 1810, returning this time to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) in 1811. He died in 1835 age about35 father of 2children. Details of John (Townson)s family are given in entry for Mary (Anderson LADY JULIANA 1790) on this Website. .. >>>Sarah (Griggs/Gregg) had a second relationship with James Hunt (Lucas) ensign NSW Corps whom she married on 22 8 1800 on Norfolk Island. She produced 3known children in her lifetime. James Hunt (Lucas) enlisted in NSW Corps on 16 5 1792 as an Ensign. He arrived in NSW as an officer on 17 8 1793 after a voyage of 6months on BODDINGTONS. On 11 11 1794 he was granted 100acres at Petersham Hill. He went to Norfolk Island on 14 6 1795 where he stayed until his death on 22 8 1800 or 1802. Sarah (Griggs) & James Hunt (Lucas) produced perhaps 3children: 1.James Hunt (Lucas) was born in January 1795 on Norfolk Island. He died on 5 8 1853 age58. 2.Mary Ann/e (Lucas/Gregg/Griggs) was born on 28 3 1798 & baptised on 22 4 1798 at St Phillips CofE Sydney. She married Pierre/Charles (Fluerty/Fluty his second (2of3) marriage, given age50) a seaman emancipist on 21 3 1816 at St Phillips CofE Sydney-or recorded there-there is no information of how she travelled to Tasmania, unless with her travelling father. In 1830-32 her husband was accused of assaulting her; she resided in Brisbane Street Hobart. She died on 1 10 1839 age41 & was buried in parish of Trinity, Hobart ..Pierre/Charles (Flaherte/Fluerty/Fluty/Flahute) was born about 1766/69/83/15/24 8 1786 at Bologna Italy or Boulognee Sur la Mer France & became a mariner in French Navy. He married firstly (1of3) Madela/eine (Mahe her first marriage) on 30 10 1805 at Boulogne-sur-mer & produced maybe 3children (but when?). He left the Navy to become a privateer for France (Napoleonic Wars) on THREE BROTHERS/LE DEUX FRERES? & was captured by the British, perhaps in late 1805 & sent to “The Downs” off East Kent coast, at which time he changed his name to Frances (Ince) then on HMS LEOPARD to Sharneefs, then onto Chatham, then onto HMS prison ship at the Downs as POW. He was enlisted against his wish into the British Royal Marines on 11 2 1806 age19 on the Royal Navy Ship LEOPARD on 1 3 1806 until 22 9 1810. He was promoted to Corporal for his good service on the LEOPARD. He then went back to Chatham then to Woolich on 26 9 1810. On 11 2 1811 (possibly) he was sent to the Royal Marine brig HMS FORWARD from which he went missing off the Danish/Norwegian coast & was presumed to have deserted; he was 5'6.25" dark complexion black hair grey eyes. He made his way back to his home town, where he found his wife remarried; & was sent back to sea on French privateer LE MILAN & was recaptured & charged with desertion by the British, held on FYER prison ship partly in confinement for 3months & in irons, tried as a political prisoner at Court Martial on MONMOUTH on 30 1 1812 (or at co.Down Ireland at age45 or at the Downs England), found to have deserted rather than been lost, sentenced to death by hanging commuted to Life/7years, held on HMS ZEALAND hulk at Woolwich & arrived in NSW as a convict on 19 10 1812 after a voyage of 5months on MINSTREL, then transferring to INDEFATIGIBLE accompanying MINSTREL to Hobart Town Van Diemens Land (Tasmania); he was 5'6.25" dark complexion black hair grey eyes. He was a seaman in 1816. In 1817 he may have been living in Tea Tree area (near Richmond). In July 1817 he aided police in capturing some bushrangers & received praise. His Conditional Pardon was issued on 25 1 1818 as Pierre Charles (Flahurte alias Francis Quce or Quce). By 1820s he was constantly getting himself into trouble with the law, including charges of selling liquor without a licence and being drunk and disorderly. He worked at the Government sawing establishment at Birch’s Bay in the 1820s. In July 1829 he was held on suspicion of stealing government timber. In 1830-32 he committed numerous offences, including fighting, drunkenness and assaulting his wife. In 1832-33 he was employed as a crew member on whaling ship HETTY. In October 1833 he w/2others was charged with stealing salt of James (Kelly) of Sandy Bay Beach at the Supreme Court in November 1833, sentenced to a further 7years & hard labour in chains at the Bridgewater chain gang; then to New Norfolk, where he was charged with neglect of duty, repeated drunkenness and improper conduct. In November 1836 he was sent to hard labour (this time out of chains) for 3months on road gang at Constitution Hill. In 1837 he was employed by Mr (Murdoch), with whom he was charged with disobeying orders & being out after hours. In June 1837 he was charged with absconding & stealing; he was sentenced to some days in solitary & a further 9months hard labour in chains, this time at the Grass Tree Hill Chain Gang on road gang to Richmond. He was then sent to New Norfolk & to the Marine Department; he was again charged with drunkenness and being absent from duty, receiving 6days on treadwheel at Hobart Penitentiary, solitary confinement and a further 3months hard labour with Spring Hill road party. In 1840 (age73!) he was apparantly issued another Conditional Pardon. He married thirdly with permission Catherine (Martin) on 23 2 1841 at Hobart Catholic chapel (St Marys?). He died on 14 4 1842 age55/74 father of perhaps 8children at Colonial Hospital Hobart with decay/old age & was buried in parish of Trinity, Hobart; Fleurty’s Point and Fleurty’s Creek are some of the landmarks named after him. ..[Most details taken from this Website] 3.Sarah (Lucas) was born on 30 5 1793. .. This record originally had the death of daughter, Sarah Wright nee Griggs listed as the convict Sarah's date of death. Any doubt can be put to rest by viewing the original death record at https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD35-1-19p48j2k
