Convict Notes

BEGGING. A ticket-of-leave holder, named Andrew Grimes, was charged by Constable Gulliford, as an idle and disorderly person, in wandering about the streets and begging. The defendant was discharged. The Courier, (Hobart) 12 Feb 1859. Destitution – Wanted A Benevolent Asylum. With all the vaunted liberality at Hobart Town, is it not surprising that this city is outdone by Launceston, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and every other Australian city, with respect to a certain provision for the Poor. A Benevolent asylum is much required and it is to be hoped the small talk in the last session of Parliament on the subject will not end in mere sentiment. A specimen of a class of thorough distress, was presented at the Police court on Saturday, when an octogenarian whose “Trembling limbs had borne him to a door” in Liverpool Street, to ask for alms, was brought to the bar for the offence, by Constable Elliott, who proved the charge and that the alms were asked just after breakfast that morning. Mr Tarleton told the veteran he had better go to the Invalid Station, where the Government were bound to take care of him, but his worship was informed that the poor old man would rather be hanged than go to a public establishment again. He said if he had a little money he could do some work at basket making. Constable Bryan informed the bench that he had known him fourteen years, and when not in hospital, he really did work, he was not a man that drank. Upon these recommendations, the poor old fellow, whose name is Andrew Grimes, was released with a caution, and the magistrates heart softened towards the man to the extent of 5s which he paid out of the poor box. Hobart Town Advertiser, 14 Feb 1859. POLICE. OFFICE.-SATURDAY. (Before the Police Magistrate and Alderman Murdoch, J.P.) ---------------------------------------------------- Andrew Grimes, an aged pauper, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with a recommendation that he be sent to some invalid station, upon the charge of being an idle and disorderly person in begging alms in the public street on the 6th instant. Hobart Town Daily Mercury, 9 May 1859.
