Hulk Record HO-9-4 (2. p 24.) Justitia at Woolwich. Received 9th August 1817. Edward Grimmer, aged 25, Gd Larceny, 14 years, Transported 3 Oct 1817. (Details of his place and date of conviction are not completed, in this record.) Cambridge, At the quarter sessions for this town, yesterday, Edward Grimmer, charged with stealing two bridles and a saddle, the property of John Edmundson, and a saddle, the property of Matthew Juler, jun. was found guilty, and sentenced to be transported seven years. Cambridge Chronicle, 18 July 1817.
Edward Grimmer was born in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and died in Liverpool in 1871. No marriage or children found. From Col. Sec. Records; 14/4/1818: On list of convicts forwarded to Parramatta for distribution. 1822: On list of convicts to Port Macquarie. 1-18/6/1822: Sentenced to Death. Tried at Court of Criminal Jurisdiction, Sydney: From Syd.Gaz.14/6/1822: George Young, Thomas Scarr, John Williams and James Simmons, were indicted for a highway robberynear South Creek on the 20th April, last, having stopped and plundered a cart belonging to JOHN BLAXLAND, ESQUIRE, and Edward Grimmer was also indicted for inciting, counselling and moving the said four prisoners to commit and perpetrate the said robbery. They stole spirits, tea and sugar etc., under gun point. VERDICT - GUILTY. Remanded. 21/6/1822: Sentenced to Death. 1.7.1822: Sentence commuted to transportation.(There was a reference to him being in VDL, but I could not find record of him there). 1/2/1822: Commutation warrant. 3/7/1822: Re warrant for commutation of sentence. Assigned to Henry Parker - Port Macquarie. 1/7/1822: Conditional Pardon (Perhaps for giving information in the court case). 1833: TOL District: Port Macquarie.
