Theft; simple larceny (from 1827). 29th November 1832 Text type Trial account Defendants CHARLES GROSS Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 29th November 1832 Reference Number t18321129-174 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 175. CHARLES GROSS was indicted for stealing, on the 9th of November , 13 printed books, value 4l. , the goods of James Johnson . JAMES JOHNSON . I am a bookseller , and live in Tudor-street . On the 9th of November I missed these books, about nine o'clock in the morning, when I came down stairs; I first noticed a vacancy on the shelves; they had been a good way in the shop, and had all been secure when I went to bed the night before - my boy, who was in the shop, said they must have been taken while he was taking down the shutters. DENNIS POWER (Police-constable H 1.) On the morning of the 9th of November I saw a hackney-coach come and stop by the toll-bar, in the Commercial-road - the prisoner got out, and went down Morgan-street; he came back, gave the coachman something, and took a bag out of the coach, containing these books - I followed him down the street, into a brothel; I asked what he had got- he said his own property; I looked, and found these books; I said he was my prisoner - he came with me some distance quietly, and then made great resistance; but with assistance I got him to the station. WILLIAM PRYOR . I am a Police-inspector. I produce the books, which were left with me by another officer.(Property produced and sworn to.) The prisoner put in a written Defence, pleading poverty. GUILTY . Aged 34. - Transported for Seven Years .

Widower with 3 children.Transported for 7 years aged 24. Married in Van Diemans Land (Oct 1834) my great - great Aunt Susannah Blackhall from the Dalston Rd Reformatory.Penitent fater stewaling sovereign from her master ) Charles did well - elected Constable only 12 months after landin. Think they must have know each other in Hackney London
