to Portsmouth.—The following were this day ... from the County Gaol for seven years, Joseph Stokes, James Blick, and Wm. Groce, for robbing the nail-ware ho of Messrs, Pargeter, of Oldawinford, of about 20£; ... Worcester Journal, 20 Sept 1827. Portsmouth Hulk Records. (Either Laurel, Hardy or York hulks) HO-9-9_3 page 33/55. Received from Worcester, 21 Sept 1827 Josph. Stokes, age 22, Stg 20£ in copper money, Tried Worcester 9 July 1827, 7 years, 6 Nov to Bermuda. James Blick, age 23, Stg 20£ in copper money, Tried Worcester 9 July 1827, 7 years, 6 Nov to Bermuda. Wm Green, age 19, Stg 20£ in copper money, Tried Worcester 9 July 1827, 7 years, 6 Nov to Bermuda. It appears that all three were sent to Bermuda. There are no convict records for Joseph Stokes or James Blick in Australia, so it is likely they both were among the many convicts who died in Bermuda.

Joseph Stokes, James Slick, and William Grove, charged with stealing about 20£. in copper, from the premises of Messrs. Pargeter and Co. of Oldswindford. Worcester Journal, 24 May 1827 Worcester Sessions commenced on Monday …. Joseph Stokes, James Blick, and William Grove, for stealing 20£. of copper money, from the nail warehouse … and Co. of Oldswinford, were sentenced to seven years transportation. Aris’s Birmingham Gazette, 16 July 1827. Joseph Stokes, 23, James Blick, 23, and Wm. Grove, alias Hughes, 19, were found guilty of stealing 20£. in copper money from the nail warehouse of Messrs. Pargeter & Co. of Oldwinford, the night of the 4th of May. Messrs. P. are in the habit of purchasing copper for the purpose of paying the workmen. The copper had been so purchased, and among it was iron penny-piece, and some other remarkable pieces, which were found upon Grove and Blick, and positively sworn to. All the prisoners were, on the morning after robbery taken into custody at Dudley, where they had replenished their wardrobes out of the proceeds of the robbery. While some of the monies found on Grove and Blick were being exhibited to the Jury, Grove exclaimed, It wasn’t that money—it was the iron penny-piece that was found on me.” It frequently happens, that prisoners, in their eagerness to rebut charge, unconsciously betray their guilt.—The prisoners were sentenced to seven years' transportation. In passing sentence, the Noble Chairman addressed himself particularly to Grove, observing to him that as an old offender, he well deserved a more severe sentence. This young man has been more than once in prison. It was mentioned in Court that he participated in the burglary committed in the house of Henry Clifton, Esq. in the College Green, in 1884, for which offence Ingram and Green were transported for life. Worcester Journal, 12 July 1827.

Leviathan Hulk Records. HO-9-8_6 page 13/54. Received from Bermuda, 25 May 1830. Wm. Grove, age 21, Stealing £20 in copper money, Tried 9 July 1827, Worcester, 7 years, To NSW 26 June 1830, R. Admiral. William was sent to Bermuda, as a convict, to labour on the public works there, the main work being the construction of the dockyard at the harbour. Around 9000 convicts were sent there to work, between 1823 and 1863. They were not allowed to settle in Bermuda after the termination of their sentence, but were returned to Britain, and often sent on the Australia. The death toll in Bermuda was very high, and the work very hard and physical, quarrying the limestone and building the dockyard and public building, while living on board convict hulk ships in the harbour. On his return from Bermuda, he was sent on to New South Wales to complete his sentence, on the ship Royal Admiral in 1830.
