Transportation

Mary Groves was transported on the Prince Of Wales, departing 31st Mar 1787 and arriving 22nd Jan 1788 with 60 passengers.

This ship carried only one male convict and 49 female convicts. She was of 350 tons and skippered by Master John Mason. Built at the Thames in 1786. She operated in England until 1797 when her registration was transferred to Fort Royal, Martinique, after which, little is known.

Family connections for Mary (Groves) are: GROVES Mary (Groves) was born about 1757. She was tried for stealing money at Lincoln Lincolnshire, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 22 1 1788 after a voyage of 9months on First Fleet ship PRINCE OF WALES. She married William (Douglas his first marriage) on 1 6 1788 at St Phillips CofE Sydney & produced 3children. She was Free by Servitude by 1796. She died about 1810-not shown in Smees records. [Some details taken from this Website] William (Douglas) was born about 1755. He arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 12 1788 after a voyage of 12months on First Fleet ship ALEXANDER. He was Free by Servitude by 1796. He associated secondly with Sarah (Dailey her second relationship). He produced 6children in his lifetime. William (Douglas) does not have an entry on this Website as yet; added by me.
