Convict Notes




Tried at Yorkshire on 26 Oct 1836 for stealing a basket. Sentenced to 7 years transportation. Departed from England on the 27th May 1837 aboard the ship ELPHINGSTONE with 239 other convicts, arrived in Van Diemans Land 2nd Oct 1837. Received a pardon on the 2nd Aug 1843. Married convict woman SARAH ANN JONES who had been sentenced to 10 years transportation for stealing a gown from her mistress in 1842. He married Sarah on the 17th March 1851 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Campbelltown. They had 2 children, William 1851 & Jabez 1859. William Gilders died 5th Oct 1893 at Campbelltown, cause of death: decay of nature. He was buried at the Campbelltown Cemetery and is buried with his wife Sarah who died in 1900. A large headstone marks their grave
