Claims

"It seems but not yet totally proven that James Gumbrell married my Great Great Grandmother Dinah (or Diana) Stow (or Stowe) on 2 February 1828 in Oving, Sussex, England, United Kingdom. It seems that he was then transported to Australia that same year after being convicted shortly after he married. She had no children by him, but later married my Great Great Grandfather on 28 Dec 1837 at St. Peter-the-Great, Chichester, Sussex, England. My Great grandfather was baptised George Daniel Gumbrell on 24 Dec 1837 at Chichester St Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex, England, United Kingdom to my Great Great Grandmother Diana Gumbrell, 4 days before her 2nd marriage. However the birth was registered as George Daniel Young. I have various records relating to James Gumbrell who was born in Arundel Sussex and later moved to Oving Sussex."

James Gumbrell, native of Oving, near Chichester, at the age of 24 years, has, for twelvemonth past, carried on a system of shop-lifting, attended with circumstances of a most peculiar description.  He is at length detected. Under the utmost apparent simplicity of manner, aided by the dress of a humble countryman,  he has recently defrauded eight tradesmen to a considerable amount, three of whom will prefer indictments at the Sessions. Hampshire Chronicle, 18 Feb 1828.
