Convict Notes

The Australian (Sydney, NSW : 1824 - 18480 Fri 29 Jul 1831 Page 3 Quarter Sessions. Thomas Hackett and Thomas Tweedy were both indicted, the one for stealing two cheeses, the other for feloniously receiving one of the two cheeses. Mr. Aarons, publican, of George-street, deposed, that as he was chatting one 'fine moon light evening lately' in a little parlour beside his tap, he perceived a fellow whip two cheeses off the shelf, and bolt with them. Aarons instantly belted after and caught the purloiner of the cheeses, at some yards distance, but without the spoil ; for the fellow took the precaution of rolling one of the cheeses before him on to a step, where, it was picked up ; pitching the other over to Hackett, his "pal", the prisoner with the wooden leg, whom Mrs. A., when going off hot foot for a constable to the watch-house, fell in with and secured. Both prisoners were skillful cross-examiners, and made out a tolerably ingenious defence. Tweedy. ā How far was I from your house, Mrs. Aarons, when your husband; as he says, caught hold of me ? Mrs. A. ā A cannot exac'ly say. It may ha' been ā ay, 20 yards. Tweedy. ā Look you there gentlemen. Her husband said just now it was only ten. Hackett.--- You said I ran away. How could I run, when I had only a wooden leg? You see that, gentlemen. These jokes not taking, the prisoner Tweedy denied in toto that he was the man who stole the cheese. The wooden legged man said he happened to be stumping along George-street, when his leg struck against something round on the ground, which he picked up, and found to be a cheese! so he was about walking off with the Godsend; when he heard cries of robbery behind, and then suspecting the cheese to be a stolen cheese, he dropped it at the feet of the owner, who instantly muzzled him. Guilty. Remanded. The Sydney Herald (NSW : 1831 - 1842) Mon 8 Aug 1831 Page 3 LAW INTELLIGENCE. Thomas Hackett and Thomas Tweedy, convicted of a larceny, to be transported for two years.
