Thomas was baptized 16 July 1809, son of Richard and Ann Hale of Upton St. Leonards near Gloucester. He had one sister, Comfort and 2 brothers in the Army (possibly older brothers John and William). He married Sarah Stock in 1828 and his daughter Mary was born a few months after his Jan 1831 conviction so may never have seen her before he left on 15 Jan. 1831, arriving Van Dieman's Land 19 Oct. As a ploughman and butcher's apprentice, was sent to Capt. Patrick Wood at Dennistoun, Bothwell, Tasmania where he met his new wife to be, Jane Reed/Reid, a free settler, daughter of convict William Reed AKA Reid. After his Ticket-Of-Leave, 9 Jan 1836, he married, worked as a butcher for Luke Evans, became a land/property owner and operated a boot making store in Bothwell, managed by his sons until at least 1921. He and his wife Jane had 12 children (some surnames Hale, others Hales) and named his son John Hale as Executor to his will.
