(t18050424-72) [A Short Summary Only] JOHN M'CARTHY, JOHN HALL, WILLIAM GRAY, Theft > theft from a specified place, 24th April 1805. 291. JOHN M'CARTHY , JOHN HALL , and WILLIAM GRAY , were indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 10th of April , 173 lbs. weight of Spanish wool, value 40 l. in a lighter, on the navigable River Thames , the property of Henry Salter , Henry Cooper , and John Cooper . Second Count, For like offence, only varying the manner of charging. Third Count, For like offence, only stating it to be a vessel, instead of a lighter. (The indictment was read by Mr. Gleed, and the case stated by Mr. Knapp.) ...there then follows several pages of details about the crime.... Result... M'Carthy, GUILTY , Death , aged 34. Hall, GUILTY , Death , aged 52. Gray, GUILTY , Death , aged 40. First Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Recorder.




Travelled on 'Alexander' with wife Jane, son John and daughter, Jane. Jane died on voyage or shortly after arrival; a second daughter, also named Jane, was born in Aust on 10 June, 1807




Wife Jane Hall (nee Landell) travelled as a free woman on the same vessel with children, John Jnr and Jane. Jane died during the voyage; Chilren b in Aust: Jane 1807, Henry 1811 and Rebecca 1814; Received land grant in Emu Plains, Evan District and resided there until death. Bur 12 Aug 1844 at St Stephen the Martyr, CoE, Penrith.
