The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Family connections for William (Hall) are: HALL ?ohn (Hall & Hannah (Diplock) of Maresfield Sussex produced perhaps 2children: 1.Thomas (Hall was born about 1783. He married Sarah (Brooks her first marriage) at Plumstead (Kent) (Smees records show in Sussex) on 2 3 1805. He was tried w/his brother & 1other for stealing a horse of Mr (Knight) of Maresfield & cart of Mr Avis of Forest Row at Horsham Sussex Assizes on 20 3 1815, sentenced to 7years (initially Life perhaps), held on hulk PERSEUS at Portsmouth Devonshire & arrived in NSW as a convict with his brother on 30 1 1816 after a voyage of 6months on OCEAN. He was assigned to his wife. He died on 11 5 1821 age about37 presumed drowned with several others in Middle Harbour Sydney while collecting lime. ..[Some details taken from this Website] ..Sarah (Brooks) arrived in NSW with her children following her husband on 19 1 1815 after a voyage of 6.5months on MARY ANNE.>>> ..Thomas (Hall & Sarah (Brooks) produced 7children-mostly girls. .. >>>Sarah (Brooks) married secondly William (Jones alias Milkey] emancipist labourer on 17 6 1822 at S Phillips CofE Sydney & produced 3children. She was recorded in 1822 as wife of W (Jones) with some of her children in Sydney. She was recorded in 1825, as Sarah (Hall) & Sarah (Jones), with some of her family at Richmond. She was recorded in 1828 with her family at Blacks Creek. She died on 21 9 1872 mother of 10children-mostly girls-& was buried at Broke in unmarked grave at Fordwich Hunter Valley ..William (Jones] was born about 1796. He was tried, as (Jones alias Milky/Wilkie), for breaking & entering, with an accomplice on 9 6 1814, & stealing a writing desk etc of Frederick (Fisher) at Old Bailey on 26 10 1814, sentenced to death by hanging commuted to Life, held at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 7 9 1815 after a voyage of 5months on BARING. He was an emancipist labourer by 1822. He was recorded in 1825 as government servant to Richard (Porter) at Kissing Point or Mary (Hutchinson) in Sydney with his family. He was recorded in 1828 Free by Servitude with his family as servant to Lt (Thorp) at Blacks Creek. William Hall, native of Maresfield, Sussex, convicted on 20 March 1815 in the Horhsam Sussex Assizes, receiving Life Transportation for stealing a horse, the property of Mr. Knight of Maresfield,and a cart, the property of Mr Avis of Forest Row. William was aided in the theft by Thomas Hall (see this Thomas Hall-Ocean on this site) and William Randall,age 52. William Hall has an estimated birth date between 1781-1784 with 1781-2 likely per various Indent and Muster records that list his age. He was one of 5 convicts sent from Horsham Sussex prison to the Perseus Hulk in Portsmouth prior to Transportation, listed as age 33 (Thomas Hall, age 32, William's brother was one of the 5 all sent to NSW the Ocean). In 1828, on the NSW Census, he is listed as 45; on the 1837 NSW convict muster he is listed as 53. Received a Ticket-of-Leave 4 May 1826 when he was in Broke Bay, Sydney, NSW. He died 14 Nov 1849 in Broke, NSW
