Family connections for Ellen (Hamer) are: HAMER Ellen (Ham/mer) daughter of John (Armer) a brickmaker was born on 8 11 1811. She was tried for stealing money at Salford Lancaster Quarter Sessions on 20 7 1829 (her third conviction), sentenced to 14years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 29 6 1830 after a voyage of 4months on ROSLIN CASTLE; she was 5'1" ruddy complexion brown hair grey eyes with a small scar on her right cheek. She married firstly with permission John (Turner his second (2of3) marriage) on 11 3 1831or3 & produced 3children. In about 1832 she was assigned to Rev J (Vincent). She was issued a Ticket of Leave on 2 10 1837 which was cancelled on 2 6 1838. She was issued another Ticket of Leave on 17 12 1843 & on 29 12 1843 was sent to the Female Factory; her Ticket of Leave was cancelled on 7 6 1843sic. She was issued her Certificate of Freedom 44/170 on 7 2 1844.>>> [Some details taken from this Website] John (Turner) was born about 1793 & became a blacksmith. He was native of Liverpool, a coloured Mullato, when tried w/1other at Somerset Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 11 10 1816 after a voyage of 5months on MARINER; he was 5'4" dark brown complexion black hair black eyes. He was issued his Certificate of Freedom in February 1823. On 22 9 1823 he was tried for obtaining goods under false pretences w/1other of George Jackson (Frankland), sentenced to 7years & sent to Port Macquarie Penal Settlement as a convict with wife & child on LORD NELSON. He married firstly (1of3) Elizabeth (Humphreys) on 21 3 1825 at St Thomas CofE Port Macquarie. He was still a blacksmith in 1827 & was tried again at Sydney Criminal Court on 24 7 1828, sentenced to 3years & sent to Moreton Bay Penal Settlement on BAMBOO on 30 8 1828. He moved to Tasmania after 1840 & married thirdly Mary Ann (Bennett). He died on 10 3 1867 age74 father of 13children at Hobart. Isaac (Cannon) was born in 1803 at Manchester & became a groom. He was tried for breaking entering & intending to steal from George (Cathrow), on 7 1 1824, at Old Bailey on 14 1 1824, sentenced to Life, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery Newgate Prison & hulk YORK at Portsmouth from 5 5 1824 & arrived in NSW as a convict on 29 4 1825 after a voyage of 3.5months on ASIA & sent to Windsor Government Stores; he was 5'3.5" pock pitted sandy hair grey eyes. On 1 7 1828 he was found guilty of theft at Windsor, sentenced to 3years which he served at Moreton Bay, returning to Sydney in 1832. In June 1832 he is recorded as employed by Richard (Driver) of Sydney as a groom. On 2 11 1835 as a carter he firstly (1of3) married Mary Ann (Wedlock/lake) with permission at St Phillips CofE Sydney. He was issued his Ticket of Leave 42/1638 in 1842 for Parramatta & his Conditional Pardon was recommended in 1847. He is recorded as landlord of the Coach & Harness Hotel. Benjamin (Buckley) was tried at Lancaster Lancashire Quarter Sessions, sentenced to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 21 8 1830 after a voyage of 4.5months on MARQUIS OF HUNTLEY. Ellen received her Certificate of Freedom (44/170) on 7 February 1844, which had the notation: "Wife of John Turner per ship Mariner 1 free by servitude". Ellen Turner married Isaac Cannon (1803–1892) in 1868 at Parramatta, New South Wales. Death: Ellen Cannon died 20 December 1871, age 64, at Philip Street, Parramatta. Her death certificate (5323/1871) has the following information: cause of death was "chronic bronchitis and long continued disease of the kidneys and liver", duration 2 or 3 years, and she had seen Dr R C Rutter on the day of her death; she was born at Manchester, England, father John Amer, brickmaker, and she had arrived in the colony 44 years previously. The informant of the certificate was her husband Isaac Cannon. She was buried in St Johns Cemetery Parramatta on 22 December 1871. Witnesses to her burial were Isaac Cannon and George Franks




There are three children attributed to Ellen's relationship with John Turner (Convict, Mariner, 1816). William Turner 1834, James Turner 1838 and Isabella Turner 1843. I can locate no information on the two sons, but Isabella married Charles Franks July 6th 1861 at Pennant Hills. George was described as a bachelor under 21 a labourer of Pennant Hills, parents not listed. Isabella Turner was described as a spinster under 21 of Pennant Hills, parents not listed. The witnesses were Sydney Charles Franks and Sarah Osborne who both signed with their X marks. Bride and groom both signed with their X marks. Charles Franks gave consent to the marriage of the groom and Ellen Turner gave consent to the marriage of the bride.

Sentenced to 14 yrs. Assigned to Rev. J Vincent, Sydney. Description - 5'1". Ruddy complexion. Brown Hair - Grey eyes. Small scar on right cheek. Female Factory from 29 Dec 1843.
