Convict Annotated Printed Indentures 1835 describes John Hamilton as being aged 30 years old; Education - could read and write: religion Protestant; Status married with one son and one daughter; Native of County Armagh (Ireland); occupation Farm servant: was convicted at Armagh on 18 July 1834 for life for cattle stealing. Had no prior convictions. Height 5 feet 6 1/2 inches; Complexion dark and pock pitted: Hair brown and eyes grey. Prisoner number 35-1819. Ticket of Leave number 46/552 and Conditional Pardon 50/1743.




Recorded as working at Lanyon Station owned by Mr James Wright in 1838. Lanyon Station is now located at the southern end of Canberra, ACT. The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) on Thursday 31 May 1838 recorded that the following runaways had absconded for a second time. There was a reward of two pounds for information for their return. The four convicts were Patrick Fitzpatrick (Surrey); Moses Howlett or Howlet (Hive); John Hamilton (lately my personal constable) and William Sangster (Strathfieldsay. Advertisements were placed in the SMH every Monday and Thursday until Friday 20 July 1838. No further information on whether they were returned or not. Received a conditional pardon from Governor Charles A. Fitz Roy on 18 July 1850. Is recorded as being picked up in Goulburn for Vagrancy on 1 June 1869. Given 21 days. Records tat his height was 5 ft 6 inches; in a feeble condition; fresh complexion; grey hair and blue eyes. That he had no previous history or connections with Goulburn. He also had a medium nose and normal chin.
