William HAMMOND was convicted at Essex, England on 6 March 1843 for rape on daughter Sarah (17 yrs). He denied the charge and said she was put up to this to receive a large property settlement. Widower, 6 children; aged 50 yrs. Life sentence. Transported to Australia per the ship 'Maitland'. First to Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales) and then transferred to Van Diemen's Land (1847). Carpenter & joiner; aged 50 yrs; 5'7"; dark complexion; dark hair; dark eyes. Native place of birth: Felstead, UK. Wife Ann, and children.
