Reuben was a brick and tile maker by trade. On 31 March, 1810 he was convicted at the Taunton Assizes of larceny in a dwelling house and was sentenced to death. On appeal, this was commuted to transportation for life. He arrived in Sydney aboard the ship 'Admiral Gambier' in 1811. Reuben was however, pretty resourceful as can be illustrated by the following Newspaper Articles..... [Hampshire Chronicle Mon 16 Apr 1810 p.4] The Assizes for the county of Somerset ended on Saturday last, there were 41 prisoners for trial, of whom four received sentence of death and were left for execution, viz. Reuben Hanham, for robbing the house of John Perrior. And then......... [Hampshire Chronicle Mon 21 May 1810 p.4] Reuben Hanham, who had been condemned for a robbery, but reprieved, on Saturday attempted, by means of a common iron spoon, to escape from Ilchester gaol, by working through the arch of his cell, and ascending to the top of the building, from whence he was to lower himself by means of his blankets. However, about nine at night, he was discovered by the governor while at work, surrounded with bricks and mortar, having made a complete hole through the arch.
