John Hanrahan was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 9th Jan 1836 and arriving 17th May 1836 with 108 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

John married Isabella Irvine (NOT Irving) in 1842. They had 13 children. After settling in Jamberoo, near Kiama, John and others blazed a trail up the mountains to Robertson, where he claimed a land holding. Over the decades he played an active role in the local agricultural community in including the Robertson Show. John died in Robertson on May 25, 1886, at 71. Isabella died at Robertson in 1896 at the age of 79. Both are buried in Catholic cemetery at Burrawang. Two of his grandsons, Edmund and Harleigh, played Rugby League for NSW.




John Hanrahan was listed as 21 years old on arrival. Native Place: County Tipperary. John was literate, RC, single, 5'9½" tall, ruddy and much freckled complexion, brown hair, bluish eyes, crucifix, serpent, 'The seed of the woman shall bruise the serpent's head.' Gen. 3 chap. 15 v. inside lower right arm. 8/10/1840: TOL 7/7/1842: Permission to marry Isabella Irving (arrived free per 'Crescent), aged 22 - John was 27 and had a TOL - Permission at Wollongong. No marriage listed on the NSW BDM - also no marriage listed for Isabella Irving until 1877ish. 9/2/1843: COF
