Convict Notes

Most of the men transported on the Eleanor, in 1831, were agricultural workers, convicted by Special Commissions set up to deal with outbreaks of disturbances, known as the Swing riots, which took place in the southern counties, and were accused of machine breaking, and destroying property in protest at the cuts in wages and the increased costs of food, etc. For many, this was their first offence, and they were prized in Australia, as fine workers, and many received an early pardon. Special Commission, Winchester. PULLING DOWN A POOR-HOUSE. Robert Holdaway, Henry James, Thomas Harding, Matthew Triggs, James Painter, John Heath, and Aaron Harding, were charged with having, on the 23d of November, demolished the poor-house of the parish of Bramshott. … Weekly Times, London. 2 Jan 1831.
