James Harkness was convicted at Glasgow of forging notes - 7 yr sentence. Place of birth given as Armagh abt. 1784. Gaol Report: character bad Hulk Report: orderley Married, 2 children. Aged 46yrs. Black hair & eyes. 5' 2 3/4". Convict no. 30270 Van Diemens Land. Ticket of Leave granted. Muster 1830: Assigned to Mr. James Grant. Muster 1832: " " " Muster 1833: " " Mr. Shoebridge. Muster 1835: Port Arthur Penal Settlement. 10/02/1835: Drunk - Fined 5/-. 1/12/1839: Feloniously receiving - for trial. 09/01/1840: Tried and convicted at Supreme Court Hobart - further 7 years sentence. 09/07/1840: Misconduct in having potatoes in his possession - 6 weeks hard labour in chain at Port Arthur Penal settlement. 18/11/1842: Murdered, by person or persons unknown, at Port Arthur.
