James Harrison was listed as 14 years old on arrival. Place of Birth: Manchester. Transported for 'stealing 6d from a house'. Previous convictions: 1 mth for handkerchief; 2 mths twice for a book and handkerchief; 3 mths for handkerchief. James was 4'8¾" tall, illiterate, RC, fair complexion, dark brown hair, black eyes, JM WW in blue on left arm, JM on back of right hand, four blue dots on left arm, seven dots between thumb and forefinger. Father: Patrick Brother: Thomas Sister: Lydia -- all at native place. 7/12/1849 Colonial Times, Hobart: William Foster, William Walker, Andrew Kelly, and James Harrison were charged with robbery under arms. On the 9th of November last. Mr. Bartholomew Reardon, who resides at the White Marsh, in the Pittwater district, was with his family sitting down to dinner, when the four prisoners, who were bolters from Port Arthur, armed with three axes and a bludgeon, entered the house, and with imprecations demanded money and rations. Two of them stood over the inmates while the other two stole every article of value they could lay their hands on. They dressed themselves in the best male attire they found, and nearly all the female dresses, bonnets, &c., they destroyed. They then left, taking with them a gun, watch, knife, three loaves of bread, tea, sugar, meat, &c. On the 18th instant, they were discovered with the stolen property in a temporary hut in the bush, by a party of seven, who were in pursuit of them. His Honor briefly summed up and the jury almost immediately returned a verdict of Guilty against all four of the prisoners. ..All sentenced to Death. To be transported to Norfolk Island for 6 years. Arrived Norfolk Island 20/3/1850. 1856: Employed by William Archer at Mt. Nelson. 1857: TOL 9/8/1858: Married Catherine McCarthy at St Joseph's, Hobart. James was 28, a labourer, Catherine 20, a servant. Children: 19/4/1862: Male, no name given. 23/12/1865: Michael 4/8/1867: Mary 5/11/1868: James 27/7/1870: Catherine 4/1/1872: Thomas Possible death for Catherine Harrison - died at Melivlle Street, Hobart, 43 years old, lbourer's wife, died of general debility on 1/5/1884. 25/7/1887: James Harrison died at the General Hospital, Hobart, aged 56. He was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Roman Catholic, Section B, Number 49.
