Anne Hartford was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Irish Convict Database, by Peter Mayberry. Anne Hartford, alias Harper, Farrell, age on arrival, 26, per Margaret (2) 1838. Tried at Queens Co, 1838, 7 years for Stealing fowls. DOB, 1813, native place, Queens Co. Married, 1 female child. Husband Michael Farrell , convict, arrived per Calcutta II (1837). Her father John Harper, convict, arrived about 1831. Catholic. Servant general house. Remarks: CF 46/632.




The Convict Indentures state that Anne Hartford alias Farrell was 26 years old. She could read; religion Roman Catholic; status married with one daughter and a native of county Queen's County. She was a general house servant. Anne was convicted of stealing fowls (not 6) at Queen's on 3 January 1838 and sentenced to 7 years. She had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 4 1/2 inches; complexion fair ruddy; hair light sandy and eyes blue. Transport number 96. Prisoner number 94-39. Comment on indenture entry; Husband, Michael Farrell, a prisoner per 'Westmoreland'. Father, John Harper came out as a prisoner in 1831. Please note that Westmoreland was crossed out but could not read hand written comment. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1846 (number 46/632).
