Prisoner details: Both men labourers from County Leitrim, Ireland. Court and date of trial: Chester Lent Assizes [Cheshire], 1830. Crime: Robbery and assault on Peter Tahany (or Peter Tarney) at Stockport [Cheshire]. Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Bad characters. Behaviour on board the Leviathan orderly. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Eight inhabitants of Stockport. Winifort Harvey of Stockport, the prisoners' wife and sister, undersigned by Peter Tahany, the prosecutor and six inhabitants of Stockport. Winifred Hervey, the prisoners' wife and sister. Catherine McGarry of Mohill, Leitrim, mother of Bartholomew McGarry, undersigned by ten inhabitants of County Leitrim. The Reverend William Keily, Waterford, Ireland. Grounds for clemency: The prisoners are innocent but too poor to provide witnesses; Patrick Harvey has a wife and 13 month old son; the prosecutor gave false evidence as he had a grudge against the prisoners.
