Convict Notes

John Hawes was 41 years old, and was transported for "Robbing a Ship" however, I think that should be "a Shop". John Hawes was sentenced to 14 years transportation for stealing a great coat, cotton shirt, a small book and a bodkin case of needles, from a shop, without having paid for them. The crime took place at Forsdyke Wash. This John Hawes was also sentenced to transportation for 7 years in 1819 for stealing a piece of silver, value 10p. I could not find him as a convict at that date, so perhaps he was never shipped out. John was single, could read but not write. 5/8/1837: Convict Death Register: Listed as John Howes, died at Port Macquarie. NSW BDM: Death 1837, listed as John Hawes aged 43.
