Convict Notes

Sainty & Johnson; 1828 Census of New South Wales: Page 184… [Ref H1005] Hawkins, John, 55, conditional pardon, Fortune, 1806, life, Protestant, wheelwright, Richmond. [Ref H1006] Hawkins, Elizabeth, 56, conditional pardon, Speedy, 1803, 7 years, protestant.

In 1824, at Richmond, John married Elizabeth Smith (Convict, 1803, "Speedy"). Elizabeth had previously been in a defacto relationship with William Keefe (Convict, 1798, "Barwell") and had at least one child from the relationship, possibly more. However, William seems to have died around 1805-6. Then she married Thomas Tailby (Convict, 1792, "Royal Admiral"). They had two sons, George and Thomas. But then Thomas (snr) died in 1823. Elizabeth is recorded in the 1825 census:. Smith, Elizabeth, free by servitude, Speedy, 1800, 7 years, widow, Richmond. Tailby, Thomas, free by servitude, Royal Admiral, 1800, 7 years, DEAD 18th May 1823 Richmond. Tailby, Thomas, 16, born in the colony, employed by John Bowman, Richmond.
